Catastrophic Events - Breaking the Cycle

Oil and gas safety experts discuss major accident prevention at inaugural GL Noble Denton conference

GL Noble Denton has hosted its first annual safety and risk conference at Spadeadam, the company's large-scale hazardous test site in Northern England. More than 50 safety experts from across world attended the two-day conference, which was hosted to discuss one of the sector's most relevant and fundamental questions: how can we collectively break the cycle of catastrophic incidents caused by our operations?

Held in association with the UK Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM), the conference also provided delegates with a unique opportunity to witness the destructive force of the major hazards that they spend their professional lives working to prevent. Nine large-scale experimental demonstrations were shown by GL Noble Denton Spadeadam's team of engineers and scientists during the event - including jet fires, a pool fire and a vapour cloud explosion - each attached to a realistic industry scenario to help delegates put some perspective on the conference's crucial discussions and debates.

Presenting at the conference, senior safety representatives from the BG Group and Total Petrochemicals gave delegates a unique insight into the innovative approaches they are taking to research the human behaviours behind major accident hazards, and mitigate the risk of recurrence through increased access to safety information and more interactive training methods.

A presentation from a member of National Grid's senior management team on the role of a company's leadership in promoting and enforcing a strong safety culture also sparked strong debate, while the GL Noble Denton's Mike Johnson highlighted the technological innovations he has made in mitigating risk through the study of the explosive components of vapour clouds.
